Según las Naciones Unidas, "se cree que alrededor de 140 millones de mujeres están siendo ’desaparecidas’ en todo el mundo, como resultado de la preferencia por el hijo varón, lo cual hace de la selección de sexo con prejuicios de género, una forma brutal de discriminación". No obstante, en una de las mayores incongruencias de la política moderna, esta semana el parlamento canadiense votó abrumadoramente en contra de un proyecto de ley que prohíbe los abortos selectivos por sexo.
Efectivamente, el proyecto de ley C-233, presentado por la diputada de Saskatchewan, Cathay Wagantall, tipificaba como delito "que un médico practique un aborto sabiendo que está fundado exclusivamente en el sexo genético".
Perdió por un margen de 248 a 82, con los liberales, Bloc Quebecois, NDP y Green Party, todos votando en contra. Los miembros del Partido Conservador tenían libertad de voto por parte de sus dirigentes, y la mayoría se opuso, pero no su líder, Erin O’Toole. La ministra sobre asuntos de la mujer, Maryam Monsef, calificó el proyecto de ley de “peligroso”.

The ship had a lucrative 19-year career until that September night when a gale-force wind caused its seams to break apart, according to the announcement. The captain, William Griffin, ordered the crew to evacuate on the ship’s yawl boat, from where they watched the F.J. King sink, bow first.
